For the past five years, I have been developing a series of portraits inspired by photographs taken at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Hollywood, CA. The series features sculptures and headstones, drawing from the traditional Memento Mori genre to explore themes of mortality and its counterpart: permanence. This is one of several sketches I used to study larger paintings in the series to explore color and atmosphere. This piece was a study for a piece called "Father" which has a different color pallete.
